What is Ashleys Furniture
Ashleys Furniture was started by Ashley Stroud in 1978, with a single store in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1989, Ashley purchased parent company Sherwood Furniture, which was founded in 1979 and had a total of 20 stores when Ashley bought it. By the year 2005, the company had grown to 63 stores, and was seeking to expand across the U.S. by building stores in Missouri, Florida and elsewhere. It then purchased Remington’s and Girard’s Furniture in 2008, further expanding its store count. The next year, the company was sold for $200 million to Fortune Brands, which is now known as Fortune Brands Home & Security.
Ashleys Furniture also has a flagship location in Columbia, where it hosts several events throughout the year.
The History of the Company
Brent Strawn (CEO, August 2018)
Ashleys Furniture began in 1966 when Jim & Wilma Bonds founded the company in Clanton, Alabama, with the intent of doing business with select customers in the Mid-South. While doing business, they decided to develop a product line that focused on housing a variety of furnishings. In the early days, one of their major customers was Memphis architect and furniture designer Vincent James Watters. Their product line soon expanded to include a line of fine furniture, lighting, kitchen supplies, linens, and craftwork.
It was then that Bonds began calling his company Ashley Home Furniture.
