Charlie Chaplin’s net worth: Charlie Chaplin was an English actor, comedian, and filmmaker who had a net worth equal to $400 million dollars at the time of his death in 1977 (after adjusting for inflation). Born in London, England on April 16, 1889, Chaplin is best known for being a pioneer of the silent film era and the movie industry in general. His world-famous on-screen personality, known as “the Tramp”, is an iconic figure in the history of cinema. Charlie’s career spanned 75 years and prevailed through decades of radical change. Charlie grew up in extreme poverty, the son of London music hall entertainers. He began working before he was nine years old to help provide for the family. Charlie’s work became especially important after his mother was committed to a mental asylum.

Charlie signed to the Fred Karno company when he was nineteen years old and made his first on-screen appearance in the 1914 film “Making a Living”. He then went on to work with several other production companies as he become a bigger global star. In 1919 he co-founded the United Artists Corporation with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. This move gave Charlie complete control over every aspect of his career. His first major United Artists hit was 1921’s The Kid. The 1940s proved to be a political controversial time for Charlie. Chaplin’s satirical work during this era lessened his widespread popularity. He was a cinematic powerhouse during his career. He wrote, directed, produced, edited, acted in, and scored his own films. He directed a total of eleven feature films.

He received an Honorary Academy Award in 1972 and was Knighted in 1975. Chaplin died on December 25, 1977, in his home in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland of natural causes. His body was dug up for ransom in 1978 by two immigrants. It was later found in a field in Noville. He was married four separate times. His wives were Mildred Harris, Lita Grey, Paulette Goddard, and Oona O’Neill. Chaplin was recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Important People of the 20th Century” for his classic comedic appeal. The London Film Museum hosts a permanent exhibition in honor of Charlie Chaplin’s life and work.

Charlie Chaplin Salary and Wealth: When Charlie was working for the production company Keystone, he was earning $175 per week. That’s the same as around $4,400 per week in today’s dollars, around $230,000 per year. In 1915 he signed a new deal with the Essanay production company that increased his weekly salary to $1,250. That’s the same as around $30,000 per week, $1.5 million per year with inflation. In 1916 he signed a deal with a company called Mutual that paid $10,000 per week. That’s the same as $250,000 per week with inflation. Roughly $13 million per year. In 1918, First National paid him $1 million to appear in 8 films. That’s the same as $16 million total, $2 million per film with inflation.

In 1927, a court froze Charlie’s assets as part of his ongoing divorce from Lita Chaplin. At the time his estate was valued at $16 million in 1927 dollars. That’s the same as $215 million in today’s dollars. He was ultimately ordered to pay Lita $1 million.

In 1952 Charlie received a message while traveling from the US to his native England. The message was from US authorities and informed Chaplin that he could not return to the US unless he appeared before an immigration authority on charges that he was a communist sympathizer. Chaplin decided not to return to the US. It was a difficult decision not just because he was leaving his home over several decades, but also because the vast majority of his assets were located in the United States, including $1 million worth of cash that was buried in his Beverly Hills backyard (roughly $9.5 million with inflation). Charlie and his fourth wife Oona settled in Switzerland on a 37-acre estate. After a year of living abroad, Chaplin instructed his wife Oona to return to the United States on the pretense of caring for her sick mother, but really the purpose was to retrieve their fortune. According to legend, Oona converted the $1 million into thousand dollar bills which she then bundled and sewed into the lining of a mink coat that she wore on the return trip! Years earlier, anticipating these exact immigration issues, Charlie made Oona a co-signer on all of their traditional bank accounts as well. This allowed her to legally extricate the vast majority of the couple’s assets back to Switzerland. The exact value of Charlie’s estate when he died was difficult to assess since it was held in Switzerland. However, when he died in 1977 it is known that he left at least $100 million to Oona. That’s the same as $415 million after adjusting for inflation.
